Hello again! We’re Emily and Gerald, third-year students, bonded by our love for food. Since our first year, we’ve explored and ranked tons of places in Halifax and often get requests from classmates about where to eat. Though law school keeps us busy, we’re excited to share our top picks and foodie tips right here in The Weldon Times.
In this edition of your culinary guide to Halifax , we're diving into some of our favourite spots around the city, focusing on several occasions that are bound to arise at the start of a new school year.
A Ferry Good Time in Dartmouth
Dear Friend - 67 Portland Street
Emily's Pick: Dear Friend, a cozy cocktail bar in downtown Dartmouth, boasts award-winning bartenders and serves up delicious small plates. Their cocktail menu is always evolving with creative new options – some of my personal favourites are the milk punch and the oysters with house-made passionfruit hot sauce.

The Canteen - 22 Portland Street
Gerald's Pick: The Canteen is the creation of former Top Chef contestant, Renee Lavallee. The restaurant offers delicious seafood-forward dishes in a friendly lake-house-themed atmosphere. It’s a local favourite for good reason. Some of my favorite dishes include the carrot cake and their crobster roll.
First Date, Kind of Nervous
Highwayman - 1673 Barrington Street
Emily's Pick: Highwayman is ideal for an evening date. With low lighting, Spanish-inspired tapas, and an extensive drinks menu, the atmosphere is perfect. You can’t go wrong with their patatas bravas and giant meatballs.

Field Guide - 2076 Gottingen Street
Gerald's Pick: Field Guide, a small gem in the North End, is dedicated to supporting local farmers and producers. Known for its creative cocktail menu, their talented bartenders can make any drink you like. Perfect for a date night, I recommend their milk punch, a classic.
Big Assignment, Big Celebration
Salt + Ash - 1741 Lower Water Street
Emily's Pick: Themed like a California beach house, the laid-back vibes of Salt + Ash are always on point. It’s spacious enough for larger groups and offers a friendly menu with something for everyone. Their drinks are great for toasting with friends, and the wood-fired pizzas and coconut cream pie are personal favourites.

Lou Pecou - 5567 Cunard Street
Gerald's Pick: Lou Pecou is an intimate pizza restaurant, specializing in thin-crust pizzas. They also serve incredible sandwiches and desserts. At times, it’s nice to indulge in a fancier pizza experience, accompanied by a bottle of wine after handing in a big assignment. In that situation, my go-tos are the Don Camillo and Truffula.
Brew-tiful Mornings
Steve-O-Reno's - 1536 Brunswick Street
Emily's Pick: If you're looking for a laid-back coffeehouse, Steve-O-Reno’s is the perfect choice. This unassuming spot has delicious coffee and some of the best blueberry pastries around. The blueberry scone and blueberry spelt muffin are especially fantastic.

Ramblers - 5576 Nora Bernard Street
Gerald's Pick: Ramblers, a garage-turned café, serves up some of the best pastries in Halifax. Their expansive patio is perfect for enjoying the sun on a nice fall day. If you do stop by, I highly recommend pairing the breakfast sandwich with any of their drinks.
