Law school is truly a journey, and we’re glad to be closing ours out with one last Tastefully Timed article. We hope you celebrate the highs and soften the lows with good food during your time at Weldon. Here’s our final recommendations for the moments and emotions you’ll experience over the next three (or more) years.

Sweet

The first time you hand in a big assignment or survive your 1L exams feels like the best excuse to treat yourself. Maybe you want to celebrate with friends after just landing that elusive summer job – or even more elusive articling offer. Sweet victories deserve sweet endings.

Peacock Wine Bar – 1715 Lower Water Street

Tucked away in Queen’s Marque, Peacock often gets overshadowed by more popular spots, but it arguably serves some of the best food and drinks on the waterfront. With its jewel-toned decor and intimate atmosphere, Peacock is the perfect place for a nicer dining experience.

The menu features beautifully crafted dishes, a tasting menu, and an excellent beverage selection. The offerings are always changing, but our standouts have been the crudo, any of their pastas, and whatever red meat entrée is on rotation.

Sour

We’ve all been there: cold-called in class and blank completely, a grade that’s lower than anticipated, or saying graduation goodbyes to lifelong friends. These moments can leave you with a sour taste best countered with sweetness.

Dee Dee’s Ice Cream – 5668 Nora Bernard Street

This local gem makes all of its ice cream in-house. Enjoy it outside on their benches and watch all the people and dogs go by. Their flavours range from classic parlour staples to bold and innovative creations. Our personal favourite is the Shaker Lemon, packed with whole chunks of lemon. On more somber days, we’ll grab a pint of Caramel Swirl to enjoy in bed with a movie. Plus, their burritos are our favourite no-frills lunch or dinner, with a scoop of ice cream for dessert (duh).

Spicy

When law school heats up – like during midterms, finals, OCI week, or the weeks balancing extracurriculars and class deadlines – you need quick food that matches this fire. Seek out bold dishes to power you through.

Tasty Kitchen – 1222 Henry Street

Tasty Kitchen, just steps from Weldon, is our go-to spot for an exam meal. Between study sessions, their combo plates feature a main, vegetables, and your choice of fried rice or noodles, which are perfect for staying full and focused. This no-frills, home-style Chinese food keeps the midnight oil burning. Our usual order? A plate of fried noodles with black pepper beef, washed down with a crisp Coke Zero. Just be sure not to eat it in the library unless you're ready to face the wrath of the librarians and mice.

Bitter

Some seasons in law school hit harder than others. Maybe you’re questioning your career direction, nursing a breakup, or feeling like everyone else has their life together. For these moments, choose comforting flavours that counter the bitterness.

Truly Tasty – 6210 Quinpool Rd

What better dish to reflect on your life choices over than a bowl of ramen topped with fried chicken? Truly Tasty was the first ramen restaurant in the Maritimes, and it has stood the test of time, featuring dishes like Tan Tan noodles. Their ramen leans more towards Chinese and Taiwanese influences than its traditional Japanese roots. We especially love their crispy chicken ramen and can confirm that both the spicy and non-spicy versions are delicious.
